Course starting dates for 2012 are:
JANUARY 8 February 19 April 1 May 13 June 24 August 5 September 16 October 28 December 16Are you new to yoga? Here are some tips for you.
What to wear
Something you can move in easily. Ladies, be sure to wear a top that stays down. When you go upside down, a big baggie tshirt will flip over your head. yikes! Men, it’s fine to wear shorts.
Shoes
You will practice in bare feet. When you enter the studio, please take off your shoes and carry them to a location where you put your belongings. Or leave them outside the studio door. This helps to honor the practice space and also keep the floor cleaner since that’s where you’ll be practicing!
Food
Avoid heavy meals prior to yoga practice. Eat something light and do that at least an hour and a half before you come to practice.
Conversation
Typically once a yoga session begins, the only one talking is the instructor. However, some instructors chat as they teach and it’s ok to respond briefly if they ask questions. No long conversations are held as that would reduce the focused or meditative quality of the practice.
*It is always ok to ask for assistance or clarification about a posture if needed.
Opening of a practice
Sometimes an instructor will open the class with “the sound of OM” which is vibrational sound that all voices join in. It’s always optional to do this; you may just listen to the sound, if you prefer.
Closing of the practice
At the end of class, instructors will often thank the students and then say “namaste.” Namaste is a sanskrit word that means “The love and light in me honors and recognizes the love and light in you.” It is always optional to say this or not.
Equipment
Mats, blocks, bolsters, belts, blankets, and eye pillows are all available for use. At the end of class, please return equipment and stack it neatly.
If you borrow a mat, before you roll it up, please wipe it off with a disinfectant cloth that is available in the studio .
NOTE: At the end of class as people roll up their mats and prepare to leave, the conversation is usually very quiet to allow everyone a moment to absorb the peace of the practice.
