Yoga Studio Etiquette

Please observe the following guidelines to help create and maintain a safe and peaceful space in which to practice yoga.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before the class time so you can get settled onto your mat. Classes begin exactly on time.
  • Once a yoga class starts, no latecomers can come in as it disrupts the peace and calm being set by the teacher. You may be asked to attend another class if you arrive too late.
  • Likewise, do not go in and out of the studio once a yoga class begins. Water and restroom needs should be taken care of before class.
  • Eat lightly before practicing yoga or hold off eating until after class. It is not comfortable to twist and bend with a full belly!
  • Yoga is traditionally practiced barefooted.
  • Always take off your shoes before entering the studio.
  • Never step on another person's mat; walk around it.
  • Refrain from wearing perfumes or musk oils to class. These heavy smells can negatively impact others in the room as deep breathing is part of a yoga practice.
  • There is no talking during yoga class once it begins.
  • The instructor will cue the entire class whether you’re new or not. You will be told everything you need to do. For example, "Inhale, arms rise. Exhale, forward fold."  and so on.
  • Your instructor may physically assist you with the postures. It doesn't mean you're doing it wrong; they are just helping you to get deeper into the posture or more correctly into alignment.
  • Plan to stay until the yoga class is completely finished. If you must leave early, roll up your mat before sivasana begins.
  • It is fine to bring a water bottle into the studio. However, no other food or drink should enter the studio; eat in the lobby are only.
  • Cell phones must be on complete silence as even a vibrating sound can disturb a yoga class.
  • If you must talk on your cell phone, please do so outside of the building. Do not talk on a phone inside the studio.

 YOGA TERMS

  • Namaste:  "The love and light in me sees and honors the love and light in you." It is used as a form of greeting or to express gratitude, especially to your teacher.
  • Sivasana:  (pronounced sha-vah-sa-nah) This is the final posture in every class, a resting posture that allows all the work you have done during class to absorb into your body. It is also symbolic of renewal. During sivasana, your shoulders or feet might be massaged by the teacher.
  • Vinyasa:  Sanskrit word that means "the connection between breath and movement."
  • Vinyasa Flow:  Is a type of yoga class that includes Sun Salutations A & B and is derived from the Ashtanga tradition. Vinyasa Flow can be powered up or down to suit your individual needs. It is usually taught as a moderately rigorous class.
  • Asana:  (pronounced awh-sa-nah) means posture.
