UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, YOGA in the FOREST, 6-8 pm, $25
The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali contain 196 aphorisms that constitute the foundational text of Raja Yoga, the royal path of yoga. This text was said to have been compiled as early as 500 BC, and in it the complete philosophy of yoga can be found. But more than mere philosophy, this work provided the blueprint for effectively living one’s live harmoniously and joyfully.
In this session we will:
-use the physical components, Hatha and Pranayama to awaken the senses
-use mantra (japa) to harmonize the energies
-discuss the four books of the Sutras as an overview
-discuss in detail the meaning of yoga, sadhana, yama and niyama and how we can effectively use the principles given to us to help us in our everyday lives.
Jonathan Miles (ERYT 200) journey into yoga really began as a journey into kung fu and capoeira in 1997. Noting the historical connection between yoga and kung fu, J began a philosophical investigation, studying text such as the Tao Te Ching and the Bhagavad Gita. In 2001, a friend led him through his first sun salutation. After a year of self practice, he went on to study Integral Yoga in 2002 with Nora Pozzi and later Vinyasa yoga from the late Arlene Bjork in 2009.
The style of yoga taught by J might be considered Hatha slow, vinyasa flow. The classes are rooted in the compassion of Integral Yoga, disciplined by Ashtanga, with the dance of Jivamukti. Students are skillfully guided through movements that build strength, courage and confidence. Each class is an invigorating blend, of philosophy, humor and a continuous effort to cultivate an inward awareness and focus on the body’s natural rhythm and patterns of breath.
J’s goal now is to use yoga to help as many as he can, in his local community and wherever the yoga takes him. In 2010 Jonathan co-founded a non-profit organization call Project Yoga Richmond (PYR), whose mission is to help spread the joy and benefits of yoga to those with the least access, and to create a stronger, unified yoga community. “Personally I get the most enjoyment out of spending time with my children, making human connections, and continuing to grow through martial arts and yoga”. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, YOGA in COMMON, 6-8 pm, $25
What is your path? Exploring your life’s mission.
The concept of Dharma is one of the oldest in Indian philosophy and is literally translated as “that which upholds or maintains the regulatory order of the Universe.” In other words, natural law. It also encompasses ideas such as duty, vocation, religion and everything that is correct, proper and decent. But what does that mean for us today? And how can we apply this in everyday life? This workshop aims to help the practitioner begin to look at him or herself in an honest and truthful way, as indeed, the act of of following one’s Dharma is living one’s truth.
In this session we will:
-begin with meditation to clear the thoughts and open the heart
-continue with vinyasa practice to harmonize our intention
-discuss Dharma as an historical concept
-have a group forum as we discuss ways to begin the process of living our lives with purpose.
